PAKISTANI DRAMAS AND PORTRAYAL OF POLICE
Please Meri Izzat Mat Uchalein
Pakistani Dramas have always portrayed police as the end all be all of the justice systems.
In doing so these dramas have been spreading the belief that police have near unchecked authority to arrest people, interrogate them and then go through their phones or even search their homes on a whim.
Such a scene was seen in Fitoor Episode 4 where Police arrive at the doorstep of Mr. Yawar Ahmed and demands that he and his sister Dilnasheen come with them for interrogation because of their suspected involvement with the disappearance of Sadiq Hamza. So MR. Yawar, instead of asking if the police had a warrant, or instead of calling their lawyer dragged himself and his sister alongside her phone to the police station.
There the police interrogate in a very disrespectful manner and insult the integrity of his sister. Instead of shutting the police officer up and demanding a lawyer, he cries and begs for mercy as his sister’s honor is questioned and insulted.
Setting aside how Yawar insults and berates his sister for lack of his education regarding how to deal with the police, this display in drama is also a disgusting disservice to the society and spreads fear of police that allows the bad apples among them to harass the common folks.
Courts, not the police, can declare someone guilty. Everyone has a right to freedom and legal counsel and you can never be forced to talk to the police, let alone sit there and get insulted with your sister. Yawar also unlocks his sister's private conversation on her phone for the police WITHOUT A WARRANT FOR IT and then pathetically plays “Holier than Thou” as he whimpers like a kid before going home and beating his sister.
Things to remember:
Just never talk to the police, always demand a lawyer if you get arrested. If stopped by the police and they start asking questions you have the right to remain silent and ask only for a lawyer. NEVER let the police inside your house without a proper judicial warrant and never had over your personal property without a warrant for that specific property. Remember only courts can punish you after a proper trial. Remember to force your rights to freedom and civil powers.
