The Justification of domestic violence
“Chahe behan izaat uchal de, Bhai hath na uthaye ?!”
Paksitani dramas have a knack for domestic violence, whether it's a saas abusing bahu or a brother seething with violence in the name of honor, these scenes always seem to be the crux of excitement for these shows. Why is it that in Pakistani shows, we fail to create excitement and suspense without the use of domestic abuse?
In fitoor, the brother “Yawar” deals with his embarrassment and frustration in a very immature manner. He berates, and abuses his sister in a manner that is honestly sad to watch. The question is, whether shows like this should resort to domestic violence to make things “Exciting” ?. This also works to normalize violence and the way Yawar justifies his actions “Chahe behan izaat uchal de, Bhai hath na uthaye ?!” is exactly the logic used when domestic violence happens in real cases. The worst part is how Yawar is then shown to be an honorable gentleman that is the victim in this scenario and his actions are shown justified.
I think it is about time for the Pakistani entertainment industry to let go of this horrendous trope of excitement from domestic violence and instead follow the lead of entertainment industries of more developed nations. Yes, unfortunately enough, violence does resonate with their audience but is it okay to profit off of this unfortunate act and propagate it ?
The answer to that is No. It is the responsibility of the entertainment sector to not promote societal vices as a common and thus acceptable occurrence and instead take the platform to positively impact society.
